Finningley Fun Day Sat 10th July

Well the day finally arrived for “Finningley Fun Day” and we were blessed with a very beautiful day. We hope that everyone enjoyed it and feels that it should be the start of similar events for the future. The included photographs will illustrate better than words what a good day we had  and what a good time was had by all. However we could not go to press without saying a VERY BIG THANK YOU.

We'd like to thank  all those who, provided prizes for the raffle or donations to the funding, Finningley Parish Council,  Yorkshire Aggregates,  The Ramada Hotel,  Doncaster Rovers, Mrs Pam Robinson,  Marks and Spencer, Walkers Nursery, The Body Shop, Lafarge Aggregates and Concrete U.K.,  Asda Super Store, Richard Johnson, Morrisons and Tesco's, not forgetting all those anonymous donors.

Our thanks go out to the many groups that meet in the Village Hall, providing social and interest based activities for residents, who responded so wonderfully to the call to get involved, to Trevor James who kindly collected and returned the “market stalls”  and of course  to all the visiting contributors.

The community group received 10% of the monies that the participating groups raised to form the basis of next years event fund while the remaining 90% went to the groups for their funds.

We want to recognise and thank all those individuals, too many to mention by name, who were prepared to “Get stuck in” to produce something for the community.

Finally we must thank all of you who came and helped to make the day a success.

Results of the Craft Challenge

Both our crafters were thoughtful in their choice and use of materials, and took great care to make their cards attractive and suitable for the occasion.  Haleema made her card for her younger sister's first birthday and Mathew's card was for his grandparent’s anniversary.  The judges were impressed by both cards, the symmetry and precision of Haleema's and the elegance and effective simplicity of Mathew’s despite a cornucopia of craft materials on the table.  Well done to our winning crafters, who each received a prize, and thanks to all the young crafters who took part.  Perhaps next time the adults will have a go!

Events we have organised to raise money for the Fun Day

Race Night At the Harvey Arms.

The decision to hold a Race Night to raise funds for the Finningley Village Fun Day proved to be a winner.  All the worries about whether we would get any support vanished into the blue as the room rapidly filled with chatting people, some a little nervous having never been to such an event before, but all obviously out to enjoy themselves. The members of the Finningley Village Community Group still glanced nervously at each other. Was everything in place , had they forgotten anything?

Then we were off!

Eric kept everything moving well, the punters placed their bets, shouted encouragement to their chosen horse and cheered or groaned as the winner passed the post.

The Pie and peas served by Eric, Gordon and their staff were consumed and enjoyed and the punters gathered at the start line for the second set of races on the card.

All in all the evening proved a great success.

Our thanks must go out to the generous supporters, the many many people who supported us by sponsoring races, owners, and jockeys. All those who provided us with prizes for our raffle or who simply said I can't attend but take this as a donation. They are too many to mention here but we did mention them all on our Race programme. Our thanks must also go to the Harvey Arms who gave us the venue and their time, and all members of the Community Group who worked and supported the event throughout. Last, but certainly not least, we must thank all those people who came along and gave so willingly, who cheered the evening on to be such a success and without whom the event would have been a non-starter. Congratulations to you all! The exact figure is not in yet, but the sum you helped raise will go along way to meet the needs and expenses of the Fun Day

Thank you.

.

I'm sure I backed the winner

Many thanks to Francine and Brione Jackson for these photos.

The Fun Day is scheduled for 10th July so make a note in your diary.

Dear Villager,

Our group is eager to see a community event for Finningley that would unite the village in a range of activities fostering and promoting friendship for residents of all ages.

We feel that whatever form the event takes it should be fun and enjoyable.

With this in mind we are exploring the possibility of a "Finningley Fun Day" with as many groups as possible organising an activity to encompass this ethos.

Each group could decide just what it would like to do, depending upon what is considered appropriate and manageable by the members.

We would welcome an opportunity to discuss the suggestion with you and maybe explore some areas in which you would feel happy to be involved.

Would you be prepared to send a representative to such an exploratory meeting arranged at a time convenient, hopefully, to all participants?

We have attached a reply slip on which we would be grateful if you would acknowledge this letter and the willingness of your group to be involved and if so state preference for days/times.

Yours sincerely,

Maureen Marson Cynthia Scully, Joint Chair
