Gardening in October

First of all enjoy the last of Summer bedding plants before the inevitable night frosts.  Take note of successes for next year. Don`t be in a rush to discard plants which are giving good Autumn colours

This peony has not flowered well this year but its foliage is superb now.

Cotoneaster berries last well into winter.

Autumn crocus (colchicum) make a sudden welcome appearance

Arum italicum (Pictum) show off their red berries

Other plants to enjoy include dahlias and non-stop begonias until the end of this lovely "Indian Summer "

Bulbs for indoor flowering should be planted now. Tidy the greenhouse, check thermostats & heaters.

Tidy borders, tie back climbers and lift half-hardy plants you want to keep.

Cut Chinese Lanterns (Physalis) remove leaves & hang upside down to dry for Harvest Festival displays or indoor decoration.

Phlox have flowered twice. Time to cut them down now.
